Sometimes old growth trees need to be removed. Since trees have life spans and their health deteriorates as they pass maturity they can become too dangerous to keep as they age. The attached pictures show a large old growth live oak in Tallahassee which had a history of dropping large limbs on the client and their house. A tree is only risky when it has a target to hit when or if it fails. In this case the entire canopy was over the top of the house, detached garage, child play area and the neighbor’s house. This tree was valued as a creation of majesty and beauty however the family needed to live under the canopy and be safe at the same time. We pruned this tree to reduce mass and weight several times but the tree had so much canopy that it kept failing every time we get a hurricane. Since we have had three hurricanes hit us within the last three years this tree became a must to remove immediately. Efforts to preserve the tree stopped and we planned for removal of it. As an arborist I want to preserve healthy trees. This tree had great health but rather poor structure. Good tree health mixed with decaying supporting branches leads to inevitable branch failures as this client experienced over the short years they lived here. The hard part to stomach is that a huge part of the home purchase was based on this majestic tree and the canopy effect it had over the property. The City of Tallahassee requires a Tree Removal Permit be applied for and approved before removal of any protected tree within the city limits.
